What a great collection of stories! There really is something soothing in her stories that resonates with my children. It pains me to take a star off of my review as it is no reflection on Susan Perrow's work, but on how the Kindle edition is set up. The Kindle edition is only organized by chapters, without subchapters listing all the stories within each section. So all the wonderful stories in this book not listed at all! So, if one is looking for a particular tale to tell, it can be very challenging to find what you are looking for. Say I wish to read her story The Light Princess. I can only find this by searching for keywords, but 'light' & 'princess' appear many times in the book. So I have to strategically remember another another element or phrase from the story that won't likely be in another story. Frustrating e-book, but wonderful book. I'd recommend a paper copy of this book unless a revised Kindle version is released.
I love this book. It's full of great short stories for kids. We read a few stories at bedtime every night. They aren't just for difficult or challenging situations, they are positive and fun stories for everyone in any situation. I almost didn't buy it because of the title, but I am glad I did, it's wonderful.
Repetition of a single story at a time for days/weeks has helped my 3 year old son manage his averse reaction to certain situations. Generally, his behavior is more "normal" for a 3 year old. Great resource
Love this book. The title is deceptive (I think) and this is my only critical remark on it. If you could only buy one book on storytelling to children, this would be it. This is not only about storytelling but gives actual stories that are unique and easy/fairly easy to memorize. And the children love them. I ignored this book for months because of the title, since I didn't have "problem" children or behaviour problems to speak of. But once I actually looked into the book I saw that there was much more here than what the title incurred. I recommend this to anyone serious about teaching or raising healthy children through the wonder of storytelling.
This book is amazing. It doesn’t just list stories, it give information about the importance of stories and to write your own to fit the situation. The stories range from short and sweet to a little longer and more complex. Highly recommended!
This is a really great book for telling stories or examples of stories for different scenarios in a child's life. She also gives really great information about how to be an actual storyteller yourself and make up your own stories according to your child's needs. Just a great book.
Love this book. It is FULL of very enjoyable stories (pretty much for ages 3-4 and up), categorized by "behavior issue". However, it is relevant to note that the stories stand strong in their own right and certainly don't need to be told only inthe context of a child's behavior issue. The stories include the author's own as well as classic stories from around the world and others from her colleagues. She also has a very encouraging and helpful section on developing your own story-telling skills. Highly recommended!
I am continually referring to this book and it’s companion, Therapeutic Storytelling, for my classroom storytelling. Healing Stories has encouraging sections on why and how stories can be used to make life better.
