Baby Daddy

A hot and hilarious new standalone from New York Times best seller Kendall Ryan

We met in a trapped elevator. Emmett was on his way to work, sophisticated and handsome in his tailored suit and tie. I was on my way to the sperm bank. Awkward, right?

At 35, my life hadn't taken the path I thought it would and I was tired of waiting - I wanted a baby. And I was ready to take matters into my own hands to make it happen.

After our ill-fated elevator encounter, Emmett insisted on taking me to dinner - he also insisted on something else - that I ditch my plan involving a turkey baster and let him do the job. He would be my baby daddy. He was a wealthy and powerful CEO with little interest in diapers or playdates. And since he didn't want kids, I'd be on my own once his bun was in my oven, free to go my own way.

But once his baby was inside me, it was like a switch had been flipped, and I got a whole lot more than I ever bargained for.

This full-length standalone contains a hot, swoon-worthy hero, lots of playful banter and some hot baby-making! Enjoy.

I knew the premise was a bit far fetched but I’ve liked KR in the past so I figured I’d give it a shot. I actually had less problem ignoring the fact that a super hot and successful guy would offer to be a “sperm donor” in less than an hour than I did that a woman facing her business failing would decide that NOW would be the perfect time to have a child as a single parent and just assumed she’d be able to get another job to be able to keep paying her bills. If you can suspend your disbelief after that then it’s all good. The sexy parts are frequent and well done...wish the conversations between the two were as detailed.

Book is definitely written with a new adult/young adult in mind, despite the H/h being in mid-thirties, they felt a bit 'immature'. But then, maturity isn't measured chronologically, is it? Author did a great job keeping the story going. Lots of sex, some gratuitous; but, overall a smooth, engaging read. Would have rated higher, but have encountered too many similar story lines and there really wasn't anything to distinguish this one from the pack. Much of the book almost felt formulary, but, there were scenes where she was able to capture emotions enough to make them real - where she managed to capture the emotion necessary to keep an older, jaded reader's attention. While this isn't my usual fare, I have to admit, the author has talent and I imagine she will get better with each book she puts out. Will definitely keep an eye on her.

Imagine meeting a hunk in an elevator on the way to the sperm bank and getting an offer to use him instead of the bank. It’s a little far-fetched, right? I had problems with a couple who had just met in a trapped elevator and agree to make a baby, just like that, but the author made it work. It turned into a great book, romantic and angsty with a side dose of funny. Great reading! Both Jenna and Emmet are career driven. At their age, they have forsaken marriage, thinking they are not equipped to be lucky in love. But Jenna has an intense desire to be a mother, so she decided to have a child, even though she’s single. In Emmett’s case, his life is his work and his company, the one he inherited from his father. He has no desire for marriage, specially after seeing how his parents marriage ended up.  When he met Jenna, he got the crazy idea that he would help her out, get some sexy times with her, and leave her with a baby, while he went on with his single life.  Yeah, right...Emmett’s idea of playing stud for Jenna was to have several dates followed by sexy times, but Jenna’s idea was more clinical. She wanted more like a bump and dump type of action. They had to negotiate and re-negotiate, and eventually they went out a couple of times to get to know each other and get to the sexy times. Since Emmett only had one-night flings with younger woman, being in a friends with benefits relation with Jenna brought to him the benefits of conversation with someone similar to him. He was entranced with their conversations, with Jenna’s personality, and her driving force. He was having a great time. He became entranced with Jenna, but she was more stubborn and fought off the attraction. They kept misreading each other’s motives and feelings for almost the whole book. The book was fun and enjoyable. I liked both characters and liked how they kept inventing reasons for keeping in touch and seeing each other, even after Jenna was pregnant. I also liked how Emmett started thinking of the baby as his and wanting to be involved in the baby’s life. The rest of the story was predictable, due to the coincidence of Jenna’s bookstore with the store that Baxter Books wanted to buy out. As I stated before, the part that doesn’t sound real in the book is that fact that Emmett met Jenna when she was on the way to the sperm bank and he offers to impregnate her instead. And more incredibly, she accepted the offer, from a complete stranger. She didn’t even Google him before their first meet! It’s an outlandish beginning, but once you get over that, the rest of the book flows in a very romantic sexy novel that entertains.

Jenna gets stuck with Emmett in an elevator on the way to her appointment with a donor clinic where she is looking to become a mother for the first time. Emmett likes what he sees and offers to donate the old fashioned way. Jenna agrees once he says he's just looking for a good time and no commitment or involvement in her or their child's life. At first, it's a bit awkward as Jenna is a bit rusty on social conventions, but they start to get to know each other and like what they see. While the writing was good and the idea behind the plot was entertaining, some predictable and totally unrealistic aspects of the book let it down a bit. Firstly, it's completely random to meet someone in an elevator, swap sexual health history as well as a contract and then agree to sleep with them in order to produce a child purely because you're looking for a bit of a good time. This is especially true when the book, as well as the character himself, talks about how easy it is for him to get laid. Then why would you agree to this in order to help a stranger have a child you want nothing to do with??? And they both enter this relationship, but have no firm idea of what the other person does for a living, even after seeing each other for a couple of months and going on several dates getting to know each other.A lot of the plot was repetitive, particularly the 'I think I have feelings for them but I'm too scared to do anything about it so I'll just enjoy the ride while I can while occasionally becoming moody or depressed about it'. This has been done to death and as a result of the drawn out story line, where the characters were headed was predictable. Also, you learn early on in the book that Emmett's business is trying to purchase a smaller, boutique book store that they really need to help his business survive. Why a mega chain bookstore would need a hole in the wall, failing business as a major plot element is confounding. A bit more of a concrete foundation around these bizarre elements would have made the book far more enjoyable for me.It was an easy enough read and I didn't hate it, but I would have if I'd paid the advertised price (I got it for free). Wait for it to come on sale.
